How To Build A Family ~ From Envy to Encouragement

Envy is at the root of every kind of evil.

James 3:16

1 Corinthians 13:4

Genesis 4:3–12

Cain's issue was with God. God did not favor Cain's offering. The scripture doesn't tell us why, because that's not the point. Instead of dealing with the issue of his heart, Cain projected his anger and envy onto Abel and killed him.

If I look at the very heart of envy when it creeps into my life the real issue I have is with God. I am actually saying God you did not treat me fairly when you blessed this other person.

Envy takes your eye off of God's plan for your life

Envy thinks God's blessings are in short supply.

Harmful effects of Envy

1. Envy denies your uniqueness
2. Envy divides your attention
3. Envy wastes time and energy
4. Envy leads to other sins.

Steps to Eradicate Envy

1. Stop comparing yourself to others
2. Celebrate God's goodness to others.
3. Be grateful for who you are and what you ahve been given.
4. Trust God when life seems unfair

When Life is unfair remember...

1. Everything I have is an undeserved gift from God. I wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for God’s grace. The next breath of air I take is a gift of God.
2. I don’t know what God knows and I can’t see what God sees, so I should trust him.
3. Life on earth is unfair because of sin, not because of God. Our rebellion against God has broken everything on the planet. This isn’t heaven, where everything works perfectly. Nothing works perfectly here.
4. God sent Jesus to save us from the judgment day when he will balance the books, right all wrongs, and administer justice.
5. It was not fair for Jesus to die in my place for my sins. But he did.
